WALLOP (NETHER and OVER), two parishes/manors
This is a most difficult name. It appears to contain Old English
'hop'='constricted valley' (cf Gelling 1984: 112), and if so it is the only
place name south of the Thames to contain the word in this sense. Gelling
wonders if a colony of Midlanders was responsible. In some desperation Ekwall
postulated a hypothetical form of 'wiellhop'='stream valley' that must date from
before the time of 'i-' umlaut, ie: probably before about 550, viz. an
established hypothetical compound 'weallhop' where the [j] triggering 'i-'
umlaut had been lost. Gelling (loc cit) also notes that 'weall' would not be
expected in Hampshire. Rather perhaps it is a name of pre-English origin. There
was a correspondence in Antiquity in the 1930's, culminating in an article by
Jackson (1939), associating Wallop with 'guoloppvm, id est cat guoloph' in the
Welsh Annals must be hypothetical 'Wolof' and what that might mean is anybody's
guess. It is not readily compatible with the medieval spellings given above,
showing '-p'.
The two Wallops are distinguished from the late 13th century as 1271
'Netherwellop' and 1280 'Overwellop' from their respective positions along the
Wallop Brook. 'Middle Wallop' of course lies between them. The powerful
landholding Wallop family, hailing from here, is commemorated in eg FARLEIGH
WALLOP and 'Wallopswood Farm' in Soberton.
